AI search is the new homepage
More answers now start in ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews than on your homepage. Here's what that changes about how you build a site.
A growing share of "first contact" with your business no longer happens on your website. It happens inside a chat window, where an AI read your site and summarized you in two sentences. Whether those two sentences are good is now a design problem.
How AI engines read your site
LLM-powered search rewards the same things a good homepage does, but more literally:
- Plain statements of fact. "We design and build e-commerce sites for sustainable brands" beats "Crafting digital experiences for tomorrow."
- Specific numbers. "Signup rate up 48%" is quotable. "Amazing results" is not.
- Structure. Clear headings, real paragraphs, one idea per section. If a busy person can skim it, a machine can summarize it.
- Being verifiable. Consistent info across your site, your profiles, everywhere. Confident vagueness reads as noise.
What to actually change
Write your key pages so they make sense with the navigation stripped out. If a paragraph only works after reading three other pages, it can't be quoted cleanly. Answer the questions your customers actually ask, in the words they use - that's what gets retrieved.
The upside nobody mentions
This is the friendliest ranking environment in years for small, honest sites. You don't need a content farm. You need clear writing, real proof, and pages that answer questions completely. Small sites that do this get cited alongside companies a hundred times their size - sometimes instead of them.
The web got more readable for machines. Make your site worth reading, and that's the same thing.
